History
Vimecon has been founded in 2005 and began its operative business in 2007. Located in Herzogenrath (Aachen, Germany) its mission is to raise the potential number of permanently cured cardiac arrhythmia patients providing relatively simple, less invasive and reliable treatment options. Dr. Kai Ulf Markus the founder, CEO and president of Vimecon was born in 1974. He started his medical studies in 1994 at the University of Aachen. Receiving a Diploma from the Université de Paris Sorbonne (France) added an international perspective to his education.
After an internship at the University Hospital of the Université René Descartes Paris (France) in 2000, returned to Germany and worked as a Cardiologist and Electrophysiologist within the Cardiologic Department of the University Hospital in Aachen. From 2001 to 2007 Dr. Markus gained extensive experience regarding the various disease patterns found in cardiac arrhythmia as well as the State-of-the-Art of their treatment – including their shortcomings.
From 2002 to 2004, Dr. Markus was able to complement his daily clinical work by joining development projects at one of the leading German medical technology companies Biotronik (based in Berlin, Germany) on new generations of pacemakers, defibrillators, electrophysiological test equipment and ablation catheters in operational as well as super visory positions. Here Dr. Markus gained significant hands on medical product development experience.
In 2004-2006, Dr. Markus worked together with ProRhythm Inc, Ronkonkoma, NY on clinical trials in Germany and the USA. ProRhythm developed an Ultrasound based Balloon-Atrial-Fibrillation (AF) catheter. Being involved in preclinical and clinical developments of devices for the treatments of heart rhythm disturbances he was confronted with the existing and persisting short comings in medical and operational treatments. This work laid the cornerstone of Vimecon's Medical Mission.
In 2004, Dr. Markus received an entrepreneurial training from the Center for Entrepreneurship at RWTH Aachen and in 2004 joined the PFAU Grant-Program within the Entrepreneurship Center allowing him to begin building Vimecon GmbH as Founder. Since 2007 Dr. Markus changed from the University to Vimecon as a full-time Predsident & CEO completed several significant VC-funding rounds, which enabled him to establish Vimecon as one of the World´s Top Rated Innovators in Cardiology.
Dr. Markus is holding several patents worldwide and won many prices for his work. Since 2011 Vimecon belongs to a select group of 50 Top Innovators from the technology, Cleantech, and life sciences sectors recognized by Venture Capitalists, Private Investors, Investment Bankers, Corporate Investors, and Strategic Partners.- New York Venture Summit 2011-

Recently, Dr. Markus and the Vimecon GmbH were awarded as "most promising Life Science Technology Company". Vimecon is the only german company so far who received this honorable award.
